Floor Tile Adhesive

Top Tips for Surface Preparation for Tile & Stone Installation

Surface preparation is a crucial aspect of tile and stone installation. It ensures that the tile adhesive sticks to the floor or wall to ensure the material forms a great bond with the substrate. When you are installing tiles using the best-quality tile adhesives and tile installation applicators, meticulously checking the surface is a must. Here is how to ensure the perfect surface for tile and stone installation.

Clean the Surface

The first step in a successful tile installation is to ensure that the surface is free from dust, oil, and grease. Whether you are installing tiles on a concrete slab, floor screed or plaster, dry wallboard, or any other surface, you must make sure that the surface does not have any external particles. In addition, you should also check the vertical and horizontal levels using plumb before starting the installation process.

Curing of the Substrate

It is important to prepare the concrete and cement-based substrate for the application of resin-based tile adhesives. The substrate should be properly cured and dry before the application of the tile adhesive.

If the tile application is to be done on new concrete slabs, they should be damp-cured and at least 28 days old before the application of the tiles or stone. It reduces the shrinkage from the tile fixing surface.

Strength of Substrate

When you are installing tiles or stone in any area, you should always check the strength of the substrate and ensure that it can take the dead load, high-traffic movement, and environmental impact. If you are installing tile using adhesive and applicators in an external area, make sure that the substrate has high strength to accommodate external factors.

Pot Life and Open Time

Whether you are using tile adhesive for an external or internal surface, it has a pot life. It is important to use the product within its open time. Many factors impact the open time of the adhesive, including temperature fluctuations, humidity, substrate type, and application method. Roff offers a range of products that has more open time that gives more application time and adjusting time. So, the contractor can easily get the tile installation done with flexibility and better confidence.

Expansion Joints

The expansion joints should not be covered with tile adhesive. It should only be filled with a suitable sealant. It ensures debris- and dirt-free joints, imparts durability, and waterproofs the joints to avoid water leakage.

Suitability of Products (Adhesive and Grout)

Different types of surfaces have different characteristics. Factors including the functionality of the area, the area of application, and weather conditions must be considered before choosing application products. It requires a certain type of material to be used to ensure proper tile and stone installation. Roff offers a wide range of tile adhesives for external and internal use. You can choose as per the requirements of your project.
